On the 3rd of February Ormside Mill Residential Centre will be holding an Open Day for you to have a look around the fantastic facilities, enjoy lunch and take part in a range of outdoor activities. With 18 beds, comfortable furnishings and a fully-equipped self-catering kitchen, it can provide great value accommodation for groups.
The Mill is a registered outdoor centre and we can offer a range of activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, gorge walking and mountain adventures. Alternatively our barn provides a large indoor space to undertake your own training, creative or sporting projects.

Personal Safety Event

Cumbria Constabulary are running a Personal Safety event at Durranhill Police Station Thursday 1st March 2012 6.30pm - 8.45pm. It includes crime prevention, personal safety, advice about lone working and an input from DASH about alcohol, drugs and sexual health.

Places are limited and anyone wishing to attend will need to make contact and book a place

The event is designed to inform men and woman, 15 years upwards, about personal safety considerations. We have already received an interest from a number of young people and their group leaders but the event is not exclusively for younger people.
The Programme will deliver a series of short informative presentations from Constabulary Crime Prevention Officers, DASH Advisors and the Victim Support Scheme.
A number of personal safety products will be on display and available free of charge or at a small cost (£1 - £2.50; enabling continued stock replenishment).

You, your colleagues, friends, family and neighbours are welcome to join us for this event.

Free Parking is available at the front of the Police Station and along the approach road.
Tea, coffee and water will be provided during the event.

Exciting Apprenticeship Opportunity for Young People in Cumbria

National Apprentices Scheme
This year 2012, the Service has committed, alongside the County Council to support the National Apprenticeship Scheme for young people and will offer 8 operational fire-fighter apprentice opportunities.

The recruitment process will start at the end of January.
There will be an initial on-line application and assessment, then candidates will follow the national fire-fighter application process.

Over two years candidates will gain a level 3 qualification through the national apprentice programme Emergency Fire Service Operations.
Apprentices will be expected to work up to 42 hours per week for the period of their two year placement with the Service.

To enable young people an opportunity to find out more, open days will be held across the Service in early February, at the dates shown below:
Carlisle Fire Station 6th Feb 1400hrs to 1600hrs & 1700hrs to 1900hrs.

Kendal Fire Station 7th Feb 1400hrs to 1600hrs & 1700hrs to 1900hrs.
Workington Fire Station 8th Feb 1400hrs to 1600hrs & 1700hrs to 1900hrs.

Barrow Fire Station 9th Feb 1400hrs to 1600hrs & 1700hrs to 1900hrs.
The apprentice programme is already operating in a number of Fire and Rescue Services, such as Staffordshire and CFRS is working closely with these Services to ensure that we are able to benefit from their experience and knowledge of facilitating a Fire-fighter apprentice programme .

This is an exciting project for the Service that will enable us to provide young adults from Cumbria with a unique development opportunity and experience in the workplace.
Unfortunately it will not be possible to guarantee employment at the end of the programme

The Service is confident that this will offer a rewarding and meaningful opportunity for young people in Cumbria.

Community/ Youth Grants available from Cumbria County Council

Funding is available for voluntary and not for profit community and youth groups operating in Cumbria.

The community and youth grants can be used to fund a variety of activities and projects from village hall refurbishments and new community notice boards to new sports equipment for a youth football club and activity sessions for a local youth club.

Grants are available for new projects and initiatives as they are unable to fund ongoing or recurring costs incurred by groups.

FREE days out for Scout leaders & families

The Connect Cumbria network is a group of museums and cultural organisations in the North East of Cumbria. We are offering Scout and Guide leaders some FREE days out which will allow you to:

• visit their venues and take part in hands on activities
• learn what they can offer to young people of various ages
• find out how they can help you meet your badge requirements on a trip

The days are primarily aimed at leaders but will be fun and interactive so you are welcome to bring the whole family along. Each venue will guide you through activities and discuss badges that you could cover with them.

Blencathra Field Studies Council (FSC) & Cumberland Pencil Museum, Keswick
9am – 12.30pm: Blencathra FSC: FSC is an outdoor education centre, offering a variety of activities from conservation to orienteering to backwoods skills. You will be given a tour of the site followed by refreshments and then a hands-on session at a near-by farm (bring wellies & waterproofs).
12.30 – 1.30pm: Bring a picnic lunch or eat in Keswick.
1.30 – 3.30pm: The Cumberland Pencil museum explores the fascinating history of the pencil and houses the biggest pencil in the world. You will visit museum and take part in an art workshop.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery & Carlisle Library
10-12 noon: At Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery you will find out how the museum can cater for different badges, have fun with some hands-on activity and explore the museum.

Saturday 10 March 2012, 10am – 3pm
Border Regiment Museum & Carlisle Castle
10 – 12 noon: Explore the Border Regiment Museum through a hands on session with artefacts and look around the museum.
12 noon onwards: Bring a packed lunch and have fun exploring Carlisle Castle. This part will not be led but we will give you information about scouting and guiding links with English Heritage and how you can book a FREE visit for your group.

Shout About Scouting.
Looking at the Scout Brand and working with local media- why do it and how to get the most for your Group from it. Also, looking at internal communication and the different ways you could communicate with your parents and members to keep them well informed.

Supporting My Group.
Looking at the purpose, roles and responsibilites of the Group Executive Committee. Breaking myths and highlighting support and resources that are available.

All the workshops will be delivered by local Scouters who volunteer and carry out roles similar to yourselves. A CD will be provided with all the resources that you will see in each workshop.

Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided.

A free bus will be available from Carlisle Sands Centre (CA1 1JQ) at 9am to the venue (returning approx 6pm). Please notify Hannah if you would like a space on the bus.

Funding for Development, training & support

Dear Colleagues
The Workers' Educational Association (WEA) has been successful in its bid to coordinate European Social Fund (ESF) Community Grants Fund across the whole of the North West. The contract starts in September 2011 and it will run to December 2013. Grants of up to £12,000 can be awarded
to groups and organisations who provide help with basic skills, work experience, training advice and guidance, job search assistance, confidence-building, personal development and support to remove barriers to training and employment. Grants can also be awarded to support organisational capacity of groups who fulfil the ESF remit. The WEA anticipates that there will be a great deal of interest in the funding and understand that applying for grants can be a huge undertaking for some less experienced groups. Therefore, the WEA will be running support workshops and events - this will spread the word about the fund and help applicants to submit bids. Details of the first round of grant funding will be published soon. Funding opportunities for coaching/ instructors for 14-25yr olds

Active Cumbria is now looking to fund local sports providers to deliver Yr 2 Sportivate Programme Activities

Sportivate is a programme that has been developed to capture the excitement of sport and the London 2012 Games to provide attractive and sustainable sporting opportunities to teenagers and young adults aged 14-25 yrs.
The Sportivate programme is part of the Play strand of Sport England's London 2012 mass participation legacy programme 'Places, People, Play'.
Sportivate will also contribute to wider agenda outcomes including impacting upon under represented groups, breaking down social barriers, attracting a range of additional funding/advocacy partners, tackling obesity and providing settings for skills development in education and community life (both through participating and volunteering).
The Aims:
The overall national aim fo Sportivate is to get 300,000 young people aged 14-25 playing sport regularly. In Cumbria the target will be 2,430 participants over the duration of the programme.
The programme will offer the participants opportunities to take part in 6/8 weeks of coaching /instructor led sessions of activity and transition them into regular and sustained participation.
Funding:
Active Cumbria has been allocated approximately £48,500 per year for the remaining three years to deliver Sportivate in Cumbria. Please refer to the website for application criteria and guidance.

Who:
Sportivate is a programme aimed at 14 to 25-year-olds (the key period during which people drop out of sport), which seeks to engage them in regular sports participation. With a particular focus on those who are not regularly participating in sport, the programme will offer six/eight week courses of high-quality coaching sessions.
At the end of the coaching, they will be supported into a local club or alternative community provider to continue their participation.

When:
Sportivate is a four year programme that commenced delivery in Cumbria in July 2011 and will run until March 2015.
Applications for proposed projects commencing delivery in year 2 from 1st April 2012 and ending before 31st March 2013 should be submitted by Friday 31st December 2011

Explorer Scout Opportunities

Dear Explorer Scout Leaders
We currently have two opportunities for Explorer Scouts and need your help to make sure that all Explorers hear about them. I’d be really grateful if you could pass these on to your Unit members.
Firstly, we have six vacancies on The Scout Association’s British Youth Council Scout Delegation. The British Youth Council (BYC) is a youth-led charity that empowers young people and campaigns with them and on their behalf. The Scout Association is a member of BYC and as such we have ten delegates who attend the BYC Annual Council meeting to help set their policy and campaigns as well as participating in other meetings, events and campaigns throughout the year. It’s a really good opportunity for any Explorer Scouts interested in citizenship, politics and campaigning. We only have six places left, so make sure your Explorers don’t miss out.

Secondly, we are currently working with Natwest to create some resources for Scout groups on financial education. To help us understand young people’s views on financial education and money management we have created a survey and would be grateful if you could pass it on to your Unit. The survey takes less than five minutes and can be found here.

Eden District Quiz

We will be holding a district quiz on Friday 18th November at the AW Jenkinsons truck stop on the Ullswater Industrial Estate, Penrith.

It will start promptly at 7.30pm, however I would advise everyone to arrive for
It will consist of various rounds, as well as light refreshments, and we will aim to be finished by 9.30pm.

Teams should be a maximum of 6 people and must consist of at least one cub scout and one scout (and made up of only cub scouts and scouts).

Explorers are very welcome to enter their own seperate teams, and will be competing against fellow explorer units.
It will cost £1/ participant, which can be given to me on the night.

We do not have a limit on the number of teams which each Scout Group would like to enter, however I would like confirmation from your group if you intend on entering a team(s).

Lets try and make this a good fun event, with the potential of it becoming an annual one!

Great packages for Scouting with Sale Rugby Club

Sale Sharks are the only North West Premiership Rugby Union team and we are looking to build links with local community groups such as yourselves.

Sale Sharks is offering scouting groups a key discount on ticket prices as well as the opportunity to be involved in free tag rugby festivals, have the possibility of bucket collections and cash back fundraising, pre match coaching clinics, as well as ball boy and mascot packages.
Something that would really appeal would be the bucket collection and cash back scheme.

Bucket Collections are a great idea if you sell 100+ tickets they will give you £5 back per ticket sold, and you would also be able to do a bucket collection at that game which would be very worthwhile to your scout groups, raising money for yourselves as well as enjoying a good rugby game.
Something else to consider is the Cash Back scheme where if you sell 50+ tickets they will give you back £5 per ticket! Both of these involve a cheque presentation on the pitch.

As well as that they can do junior tickets from £4 a game which is definitely a worthwhile opportunity. Coming down to a rugby match would be something fun and exciting as well as being a new thing to try, with the buzz of the world cup we are looking to promote North West Rugby Union.

It would be even more worthwhile to maybe organise a district outing to further take advantage of the £5 back per ticket, if 50+ of you came down then that would £250 back for yourselves!

New Aikido Martial Arts Class- Penrith

Aikido is a non-aggressive, non-competitive martial art that offers individuals the opportunity to explore themselves and how they connect with others through the practice of self-defence.

Students learn at their own pace and to their own depth in an informal and friendly environment where the emphasis is on looking after each other whilst absorbing effective technique.

The Aikido taught is not a 'fighting' system: the aim is to create harmony and control of self and events that impact on us, in fact it is specifically about not fighting.
It is so hard to describe Aikido because it is different for everyone. You can read endlessly, see videos, even watch it live, but none of that will really tell you what it is like you have to feel it yourself.

To discover your aikido soon, come to Penrith sports centre on Thursday night's between 7 and 9pm. Send an e-mail or call for an instant update for when they will start.

Classes are open to anyone over 12 years with no upper limit and to anyone with use of their arms and upper body.

Classes for under 12's are available on request.
Under 12's still have a soft and developing physique and thus they reduce the level and number of techniques taught due to potential dangers.
Neil is open to discussing demos and taster sessions with local Scout Groups. To discuss the idea's further or if anyone wants to they can watch or try out on thursday nights at Penrith.

Young Leaders to Run New Flagship Programmes (England)

Teamv - coordinated by v, NIACE, Charities Aid Foundation and The Rank Foundation is recruiting inspirational young people aged 18-25 to run three flagship projects, in which they will coordinate volunteers to work with them in tackling key social issues in local communities across England.

The programme will focus on key themes such as protecting the planet, promoting healthy living and regenerating community spaces. To help the young leaders prepare for their roles, they'll be offered training to equip them with the skills to coordinate local projects and manage volunteers. Teamv leaders will also manage a small budget, alongside a range of toolkits and resources to help them turn nationally coordinated projects into positive action.

The three local projects will be rolled out in November 2011 and again in February and May 2012. In June 2012, participants will be invited to attend a graduation ceremony where they can reflect on their skills, experiences and achievements. Programme graduates will also be able to apply for a Teamv scholarship of up to £1,000 to support their progression and personal development.

Don McCutcheon will be standing down next summer after 9.5 years of leading the District through growth and development. The District Commissioner is the volunteer manager who ensures all Scout groups are supported so that the young people get the best quality Scouting they can.

We are looking for someone who wants to make a difference in their local community, someone who has enthusiasm and enjoys working with adults. Beavers Badge Day Fun

On Saturday 3rd September 2011, 30 Beavers from Eden and Reivers (Carlisle) District Scouts, along with 13 adult volunteers, visited Killhope Lead Mine, County Durham to have fun and complete their Experiment Badge.

The Beavers that came along represented 6 different Scout Groups from the two districts, so as well as being a great day out and getting a new activity badge to add to their Beaver uniform, it was also a great opportunity for everybody (young and old) to make new friends and see how widely spread Scouting is in the area.

When the Beavers arrived at Killhope, they were split into groups and through a variety of activities were shown how lead was mined from the North Pennines over a hundred years ago. They went underground into the mine and they saw how water was drawn down from the reservoir to power giant water wheels and machinery. They carried out experiments on the washing floor, looking at the density of different minerals and how their weight was used to help separate materials from underground and they looked at what it was like to live at the mines when you weren’t working. Beavers finished their day with a walk through the woods, where some groups were lucky enough to spot red squirrels and a fox, and by writing a newspaper report about their day, to share with other beavers back at their Beaver Colony.

The day was organised by the local Scout Development Project and Eden District Events team as one part of a bigger Scouting Skills, ‘Awards for All’ Lottery funded project. Organiser Hannah Bester said, ‘the day was a great success, the weather was kind and everybody had lots of fun. We really wanted to put on a day that would provide inspiration to leaders, showing a different way to approaching an activity badge and its delivery, and a day that would encourage parents to come along and help out in an informal setting, showing them how much fun they can have when they volunteer for their local Scout Group, and finally of course, for the Beavers to have a great adventure too.’

Appleby Beaver James Fisher said that he ‘enjoyed walking in the woods and spotting the fox’ and his friend Jake Wharton said he had a ‘great time smashing rocks on the washing floor’.

All the beavers who attended the day were successful in achieving their Experiment badge but very importantly, feedback from adult volunteers has been positive, showing that they really enjoyed their experience too. Parent Emma Pont commented that ‘I was nervous this morning about what it would be like but it’s been brilliant’.

The Scouting Skills project will be continuing with a Scout camp at the end of the month, focusing on traditional skills such as firelighting and shelter building, an Entertainer Badge day for Cubs in November where a number of local professionals will be providing workshops in activities from street dance to magic to drumming, concluding with a weekend in March which will develop leadership and Scouting skills for some of the older Scouts and Explorers. All of the days will continue to encourage more adults to volunteer for Scouts, as well as offering support to current volunteers.

A weekend open to all the Scout troops in Eden and Reivers Districts which will help Scouts to make new friends, work towards a number of badges and develop theier Scouting Skills.

On arrival, Scouts will be mixed into teams for the weekends activities and have an opportunity to try: tent pitching, first aid, orienteering, knife/ axe/ saw work, shelter building, fire lighting and pioneering.

Refreshments and acitvity resources will be provided by the Districts and Development Office Project (funded by Lottery Awards for All) so Groups will only need to provide their camping kit and food for the weekend.

Camping costs are £8/ Scout with all adults and helpers camping for free (covered by the Lottery funding)
This is a great opportunity for leaders, as well as Scouts to learn new skills and have a go and remember, camps are a great way to engage with parents and encourage them to volunteer as well. Parents staying overnight will require a CRB check- contact Hannah ASAP if required.

We will be offering the following activities on the day:
Campfire Songs & Rotten Tricks (a workshop of traditional Scout Campfire songs, actions and all, and some of the those campfire skits and tricks we all wish we could remember, by Adrian Backhouse, Alston Scout Group).
Movie Magic (will be provided by Darren Bean, Appleby Scout Group, who is all about the film, camera, action- this workshop will be full of surprises, blood and gore and more)!
Court Jesters (Cubs will be given a demonstration and taught in a number of different circus skills by Jesters of Ambleside http://www.ukjuggling.com/index.html).
Magicians Apprentice (led by well known, local, all round entertainer, StuDiDoo, Cubs will be given their own magic props kit and tricks book to use and keep, while being taught some slight of hand http://www.stu-di-doo.com/).

A leader from all Cub Packs in the 2 Districts has been sent a pack of letters, ready to hand out the information to Cubs now that they're back after the summer break. This is going to be a brilliant day and we look forward to seeing you there.

This is a chance for leaders to sit back- or join in- have a laugh and learn.
This is also a great opporunity to encourage parents to help out and to show them how much fun it is to volunteer. Letters to cubs will invite all parents to volunteer if they would like.

On Sunday, adult volunteers (leaders or parents) will be welcome to attend and to assist/ observe/ learn from the young leaders while they deliver the activities to Scouts.

Roverway is a joint European WAGGGS and WOSM event for 16 – 22 year old Rover Scouts and Ranger Guides from Europe and all over the world, organised by the Guides and Scouts of Finland.

The main event of Roverway 2012 takes place in Finland 20th – 28th July 2012.

It is a 9 day event that includes two main parts; path and camp. Roverway will bring together more than 3000 rovers and rangers from all over the world – it will be the event that you don’t want to miss!

Explorers Pulse Music Festival 21st-23rd October 2011- Join the party, Join the fun!

Matt Paiton has written to invite your Explorers to join them for the second Pulse music festival in East Lancashire this October half term.

The event is exclusively for Explorers and is held at Bowley Scout Camp in Great Harwood. Pulse is no dodgy Scout disco with a few flashing lights and a DJ no one wishes they’d heard of, they push themselves to get the latest lighting and sound equipment with a great mix music for a true nightclub style experience, plus of course a great mix of activities on during the day to keep everyone busy.

Thanks to the success of last year they're pleased to announce they're extending Pulse to a 3 day event running from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd October and running even more activities during the day. Tickets are only £35 which includes all food, camping fees, T-shirt and activities, with all bookings before September 23rd being entered in a draw for one lucky person to get a full refund.

To make the event more accessible for groups from outside the county they've put on a special dial-2-ride service from Blackburn train station which has direct links to Preston, Manchester, Leeds and York, alternatively parking will be available at Bowley for minibuses etc.

Please see below a comunication from the Head Quarters Activity Team about some changes to policy, particularly in regards to hill walking and high ropes (including crate stacking)

The Operations Sub-committee has agreed improved rules for hillwalking and new rules and guidance for high ropes activities (which includes crate stacking) within Scouting. The new rules and guidance for high ropes activities are for implementation by 31 March 2012 to ensure those running activities have time to make any updates to their operation. The updates to hillwalking are for implementation immediately as they don’t place any restrictions on activities that were happening within the existing rules.
This follows lengthy reviews, consultations and pre-launch checks with the Movement. The changes have been designed to remove some of the barriers that have been identified, and provide support, where none previously existed, in running these activities to ensure their continued, safe provision for our members.

Ayers Explorer Scout Unit Fundraising Event To Support Forces Childrens Trust

Ayers Explorer Scout Unit in Carlisle are always desperate for funds to support their own members to enjoy the many opportunities Scouting provides, but also attempt to support the wider community in various ways.

This year they will be donating 50% of the funds from their sponsored event to the Forces Children's Trust. The trust is a small charity devoted to helping children whose father or mother has died, or has been seriously injured, whilst serving as a member of the British Armed Forces.
Ayers are a very active unit of 14 to 17 year olds who like a challenge; therefore they have planned a 24 hour endurance walk, setting off from Lancashire / Cumbria Border on Saturday 23 July at 10am, aiming for Carlisle City Centre in 24 hours (a distance of about 54 miles)

Community Challenge for Scout Groups

This autumn Scouting plans to launch Scout community week. The actual event will take place next spring time.

To help us with our launch work we are looking to find some good case studies of Scout Groups doing some great work in their community. Once we find these groups then we can work up some case studies and use them for both our external and internal communications around the launch of this event.
So if you know of or are involved with Scout Groups that are already doing some great stuff in their community then please drop me a line. All I need is details of the Group and if possible the name and contact details of the GSL or SIC.

Examples of things that would make good case studies are as follows
- Visiting people in hospital
- Renovating children's play areas
- Cleaning up footpaths
- Giving blood (Networkers only I guess)
- Keeping older peoples gardens in order
- Creating eco habitats
- Creating walkways in forested areas
- Delivering goods to those with mobility issues in challenging weather condistions
- Emergency aid teams or support

These weekends are open to all Explorers and adults.

Are you ready to gain training and work towards a Scout Permit?

Young Leaders Challenge and Patrol Leader/ APL Activity Days

Calling all Eden & Reivers Young Leaders!!!

Exciting opportunity to develop skills, learn new tricks and to take the lead.

3rd-4th March 2012, Ratlingate Scout Centre

Saturday 3rd Mar.
Young leaders will be invited to attend a day where bushcraft activities will be delivered by freelance instructors to help to develop and enhance Scouting skills.
(If young leaders attend this day, they are required to commit to Sunday 4th March but camping on Saturday night is optional).

Sunday 4th Mar.
All Scout Troops in Eden & Reivers will be invited to send up to 6 Scouts to participate in a round robin of traditional scoutcraft activity bases that will be delivered and led by young leaders.

On Sunday, adult volunteers (leaders or parents) will be welcome to attend and to assist/ observe/ learn from the young leaders while they deliver the activities to Scouts.

Full details will be sent to Explorer and Scout leaders in the Autumn term.
If you have a young leader who is not in touch through either of these routes (or registered with Geoff & Iain), please let Hannah know so that they receive the information.

Scouts Challenge Weekend

Eden & Reivers District Scouts.
We are running a challenge camp on the 30th Sep- 2nd Oct.

The camp, based at Ratlingate, will have a number of bases operating over the weekend which will challenge teams of Scouts to compete against each other and show off their Scouting Skills. This is also a great opportunity for Scouts to learn and develop new skills too.

Leaders- this is a great opportunity to encourage some new parents to help out too. If you get them to contact me now we can get their CRB's through asap. HQ research shows that camps are a tipping point for parents, encouraging them to volunteer on a more regular basis!

Cub Badge Day Entertainment

Eden & Reivers District Scouts will be holding a cub badge day on:

Sat 5th November from 10-4:30pm at Ullswater Community College, Penrith.

The aim of the day is for all cubs who attend to complete their Entertainer Badge.
A series of rotating workshops/ bases will be available on the day, culminating in a show at the end, showing all the new skills that the cubs have learnt and had fun experimenting with throughout the day.

A coach will be available from Carlisle to assist with transport. There will be a minimal charge for the day and booking will be required.
Full details will be sent from Hannah to all Cub packs once instructors/ activities have been confirmed.

Eden & Reivers Beaver Badge Day- Sep 2011

An opportunity for leaders to observe and learn new skills and activities for their Beaver programme.

An introduction to volunteering on a flexible basis for parents and other adults.

Error in Focus Scout Magazine

Hopefully you will have recently received the June/July issue of Scouting magazine and the relevant supplement for your role, Focus.
HQ are contacting all to apologise for factual errors that appear in the article _AGM = A Good Meeting _on page 11. Content not intended for this article referencing how to run an executive meeting was included by mistake.

They are keen to share correct information and support about how to run both an AGM and an executive committee meeting, and this can be found within the resource for Group Chairman

(pages 11-14). This resource is aimed at Scout Groups so it should be remembered that there will be some technical differences if you are running an AGM for a District or County/Region.

If you know any readers of Focus within your team who are not on email, your help in passing on this information is appreciated. This will also be announced in the August/September issue of Focus.

International Citizen Service (ICS)

Restless Development, the youth-led development agency, is promoting a new overseas volunteering opportunity as part of a leading UK government pilot initiative,

International Citizen Service (ICS). ICS will offer young people aged 18 to 22 the opportunity to spend 12 weeks in countries in Africa or Asia, utilizing their skills to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing young people in these regions, and contributing to meaningful development overseas.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that ICS want all young British citizens to have access to. ICS will provide young people with the opportunity to learn about a new environment and global issues, and will also equip them with key life skills which will remain with them long after their return to the UK, supporting their career development plans. The content of each placement will vary depending on the specific context but all placements will include structured training and support incountry.

It is hoped the first group of volunteers will be starting their overseas placements in July 2011 (with additional placements leaving in September 2011, October 2011 and January 2012).

Participants do not need to have any prior experience or qualifications, nor should cost be a barrier. The amount each young person will need to contribute to take up a placement will depend on their individual financial situation. Some places will be fully funded, whilst others will be asked to fundraise some money towards the cost of their placement.

Cycle Challenge- 18th Sep

Jennings Rivers Ride- 18th September 2011

ABOUT THE EVENT A Cycle Sportive is a long distance, organised, timed, mass participation cycling event on public roads. Starting, and finishing, in Keswick, the Jennings Rivers Ride routes follow the path of the devastating effects of the 2009 Cumbrian floods. Sections of the routes follow the affected river courses and criss-cross over many of the bridges that were either destroyed and replaced or were badly damaged during the floods.
Family Fun It's not all about cycling as the event will include a family fun day in Fitz Park, Keswick at the start / finish point of the event. There will be a number of stands and fun events for all the family to enjoy and take part in.
The Middle Distance event is a great event for anyone looking for a testing but achievable cycling challenge and the route will appeal to both cycling novices (with some preparation) and experienced riders alike. The route totals close to 40 miles of lovely Lakes roads, heading out towards Cockermouth crossing Ouse Bridge and returning via the rebuilt Lorton Bridge and finishing with a climb over Whinlatter Pass.
The Big Day Out Ride is aimed to challenge the more experienced rider and heads all the way out to the Irish Sea at Workington via Cockermouth. If that was not already enough the riders return to Keswick via Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter passes to complete an epic ride of over 85 miles - although with those hills it's sure to feel more like a hundred.

57km / 35.8 miles £25 2 Feed Stations

145km / 85 miles £25 3 Feed Stations

Snowsports

Amendment to allow mixed groups of skiers and snowboarders under a skiing or snowboarding permit

Shooting
The Crime and Security Act 2010 tightens the offence of parting with possession of a firearm to a young person not authorised to posses it by making negligent storage that MAY result in the transfer of possession to such a young person explicitly criminal.

Caving
There are a number of cave systems that also include an element of use of mine systems. To avoid the need to have mine exploration and caving permits for these systems when the mine system use is minimal, a number of these systems have been defined as caves, so mine exploration permits, mine inspection reports etc are not required. The full list is included in the caving factsheet.
Updated resource: FS120451 Caving. Added list of joint cave/mine systems that are classed as caves.

Mine Exploration
Amendment to add mine exploration as a separate activity to caving and to require the use of mine inspection reports when taking part in mine exploration.
Updated resource: POR 9.35 Caving and Mine Exploration

We are currently talking to a number of parties who own mine inspection reports with the aim of facilitating access to these reports for Scouts wishing to use these mines. To help us know which mines we should be concentrating this effort on, please could you let us know of any mines that you wish to use within Scouting that you don't currently have access to a mine inspection report for.

Changes to Scout POR: Swimming

Main changes
• Paddling has been clarified and requires no qualification by leaders

• No further qualifications are required in instances where a lifeguard is provided (including swimming pools and beaches)
• Swimming in pools and Class C waters are now managed in line with other Class C water activities. No qualifications are required by leaders
• Swimming in all other open waters (B1 and higher) has been simplified and safety cover can be provided by either:
- a water activities permit holder (when following the guidelines

outlined in the swimming factsheet)

- someone who holds the Royal Life Saving Society Water Safety

Management Programme (WSMP) or any equivalent or higher award.

They are organising a 2 week tree planting blitz during the last 2 weeks of March.

Public tree planting day on Sunday 20th March.

Campers arrive on Friday night and are ready to start activities at 9:30am Saturday. The weekend will have 4 areas of activities: Skills, Crafts, Challenges and Adventure. Saturday night will also include a wide game or night hike, with the weekend finishing at 2pm on Sunday.

Charity Book Collection 2011

Bookbridge is looking for Scout volunteers in every Scout region to collect books to help teach English to children in Mongolia.

Bookbridge is a small Charity which was created by Scouts in Germany with the aim of establishing partnerships with local communities in developing countries. They have also produced a number of materials on www.scouts.org.uk/pol to help leaders to deliver the Global Programme Zone.

How it works:-
Volunteers create a Regional Collection Hub. For 2 weeks in June 2011, books will be sent from local groups to the Hub. I recently had to have some a5 full colour prints done to promote the new Botcherby Group and I found a little gem in Carlisle.

Opening Doors Cumbria is a social enterprise who started out as a charity working with people with learning difficulties. They still actively work towards their original aims but now offer a fast, quality and competitive printing service.

Youth Council:-
Youth Councils are being created in 6 areas across Cumbria. They are currently looking for more young people who would like to join the planning group. The planning group are looking at how best to launch and promote the Youth Council to young people across Cumbria, including the nomination, voting and appointment process of the Youth Council itself. Cumbria Youth Support Services:-
at Cumbria Council want to carry out a needs analysis of young people aged 13-19yrs in Cumbria, i.e. they want to ask you what's important for you and your friends! You would need to complete 3 online questionaires, starting in December. If you're interested then Joanne King needs to know ASAP at

Police Independent Advisory Group (North Cumbria) are seeking young people who would like to sit on the panel.

Attention Skate Mad Scouts!

If you have any Skate mad Scouts or would like to help them work towards their badge read further:-

There will be a 'Late Skate' indoor event scheduled for the evening 7th January at the Sands Centre, which will consist of a coaching session followed by a BMX session, then Skateboard/Blade free skate session. All under 16s will need to be signed in by a parent or guardian aged 18 or above.
Another 'Late Skate' event is intended to be around Feb/March time, with an exact date to be confirmed, however the current last planned event will take place on 6th May.

Carlisle City Centre Christmas Festivities
As part of Carlisle City Centre Christmas festivities, there will be a Lantern Procession on:

Thursday 9 December 2010, 5.30pm from the Castle Green.

being led into the City Centre by a Christmas Carnival Band and 3 wise men on camels. Once in the centre, there will be carol singing and a variety of other street entertainment to enjoy.

Carlisle City Council are looking for community groups and individuals to take part in the procession and can either supply them with lanterns or they can make their own, which is preferable.

To help with this, some workshops are being arranged where people can learn how to make the lanterns,
all the necessary equipment and materials will be provided. .

The first workshop will be on Saturday 20 November 2010 at 9.30am in Botcherby Community Centre, Victoria Road, Carlisle.

giving details of which group they represent, how many people will take part in the procession and how many
lanterns they might want to make after the workshop.

ACTion With Communities in Cumbria AGM

Notes from ACTion With Communities (ACT & VAC) in Cumbria AGM- 9th Nov 2010

Rural Cumbria & The Big Society (Nicola Kirby)
Big Society = movement of powers for central to local government, an active involvement by citizens in their local community, support (but nor necessarily financial) for charities. National there are 4 community vanguards and one of those is Eden. The area covered has 3 clusters made up of over 30 parishes and they have completed community action and fundraising plans for the future.

Rural Advocacy, the Rural Share and the Rural Challenge (Roger Roberts)
ACT work to:
Help communities with emergency planning strategies for issues such as flooding
Whole Valley project works with various agencies & local farmers to tackle environmental issues that effect communities as a whole.
Tebay & Orton Project is a sense of place project working with the local community they have undergone archaeology workshops and plan to utilize part of a local church as a local heritage information/ records centre.
Provide a directory of community assets e.g. village halls.
Exchange is a project where communities have lost assets (shop, post office) and work to try and create a local exchange (cafe, book exchange) so people have somewhere to meet and be sociable.
BASIS is for developing youth & rural organisations, helping to develop marketing, planning, policies etc.

OCSI were procured to produce a statistical document that looked at local communities below the super output area level. The aim was to count people as individuals instead of percentages to gain a real visualization of where deprivation (transport, services, income, unemployment, fuel poverty) lay throughout Cumbria. This document may be useful for future grant applications and is titled The Rural Share of Deprivation in Cumbria.

Football Tournament
