CVS Courses for Volunteers and Volunteer managers

With the New Year approaching, please find some new training courses that Cumbria CVS have planned:


Volunteering Works - short courses for volunteers Minute Taking, Wednesday 25 January 2012, 9.30am -12.30pm
Penrith Methodist Church, Wordsworth Street, Penrith CA11 7QY

This course for volunteers will look at:
*the purpose and use of minutes
*preparation for taking minutes
*what minutes should include and what should be left out
*minuting presentations and information briefings
*the tasks of the effective minute taker
*effective listening
*tips and tricks for note-taking
Communication Skills, Wednesday 22 February 2012, 9.30am -12.30pm
St Andrews Parish Rooms, St Andrews Place, Penrith CA11 7XX

This course will look at:
*who you, as volunteers, need to communicate with and why
*misunderstandings and why they happen
*the role of listening in communication
*different ways of communicating
*what to do if things go wrong

Equality & Diversity, Thursday 8 March 2012, 9.30am -12.30pm

This interactive workshop will explore our views and emotional responses to the inclusion of people with support needs

This session will give participants an opportunity to:
*share their thoughts and feeling about disability
*look at how our organisations canbetter serve the diverse make-up of our communities
*challenge stereotypes and prejudices

Volunteer Managers Training Courses
Dealing with difficult volunteers, Tuesday 24 January 2012, 10.00am -3.00pm

The day will enable you to:
*discuss concerns about dealing with difficult volunteers
*understand the importance of policies and procedures
*look at poor performance or why volunteers do the wrong things
*consider the steps necessary when there is a problem
*explore different types of behaviour a volunteer may display
*be more confident and more assertive
Supporting & Supervising Volunteers, Tuesday 28 Feb 2012, 10.00am -3.00pm
Morton Community Centre, Wigton Road, Carlisle CA2 6JP

This course will enable you to:
*understand how to support volunteers
*identify different methods of support for volunteers
*recognise the importance of induction, training and supervision of volunteers and what should be included
*value volunteers
Recruiting, Selecting & Screening Volunteers, Wednesday 28 March 2012, 10.00am -3.00pm,
Penrith Rugby Club, Winters Park, Penrith CA11 8RG

The day will enable you to:
*look at the importance of being able to explain clearly what you do in order to attract volunteers
*look at the volunteers role and the role of others in the organisation in the recruitment process
*look at the importance of promoting outcomes as well as activities
*look at the principles of a targeted recruitment message

County Volunteering Network Meeting, Thursday 9 February 2012, 10am - 12noon

Topic: How to retain volunteers and how to develop exit strategies for volunteers
Do you involve volunteers within your organisation? Would you like to learn more about how to retain volunteers? Do you have an exit strategy for when volunteers leave? This network will provide you with a fantastic opportunity to gain an insight into these areas and to discuss, reflect and share ideas with other Volunteer Managers across Cumbria.
